Backed by a top-rated climate and ecological strategy shaped with input from residents, the council is on a mission to make H&F carbon net zero.

A major focus is tackling emissions from council-owned buildings, which currently make up around 80% of the borough’s total carbon footprint. As part of a new cross-borough energy masterplan, the council is working to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve energy efficiency across its estate - from housing blocks to public offices.

Where will the money go?

Funds raised through the council’s green investment initiative will be used to support a variety of eco-friendly and sustainable transport projects across the borough, including:

  • Expanding green spaces: from rain gardens to dedicated wildlife zones, these efforts will help boost biodiversity and provide better flood defences.
  • Tackling air pollution: especially around local schools, with plans to install green walls and improve drainage to create cleaner, healthier environments for children.
  • Promoting active travel: with new secure bike parking popping up across H&F, including options for families using cargo bikes.

A transparent, climate-conscious approach

The funding follows the Green Loan Principles and sits within H&F’s wider Green Finance Framework, ensuring money raised can only be used for environmentally responsible initiatives. Local investment platform Abundance will track how the funds are spent, providing ongoing transparency throughout the life of the investment.

For residents, it’s another step towards a greener borough, where environmental ambition is matched by tangible local action.
